It's said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. With his photographs, Gaston Paris invites us to rediscover the world around us. Galerie Roger-Viollet presents a selection of Gaston Paris's photographs in a thematic exhibition from October 2, 2025 to January 17, 2026. This free exhibition, entitled L'équilibre du carré, brings together 58 black-and-white prints that demonstrate the singularity and creativity of Gaston Paris's photography.
Known for his sharp eye, low-angle views and modern, surrealist style, Gaston Paris left his mark on twentieth-century photography. The artist left behind an important collection of 15,000 negatives, and a career that influenced many other artists.
The photographs in this exhibition are all in square format (the clue was in the name). It's in this special frame that the artist expresses himself and lets us see a different world.
In fact, this square format is always very elaborate. No detail is left to chance, and the composition is finely crafted to tell a story in a single image. With poetry, and often a great deal ofhumor, Gaston Paris immortalizes the City of Light, its architecture, artists, workers and inhabitants.
Trained as a journalist, Gaston Paris has worked for various newspapers and magazines. He has made a name for himself with his reports on society and current affairs, but also for his aesthetically pleasing shots of urban landscapes and celebrities.
The exhibition features a wide variety of shots: from Parisian monuments to backstage at the opera or circus, from workers to artists... Gaston Paris knows how to capture our gaze and direct it to the elements he deems important. Each photograph tells a story, making reality more poetic or mysterious.
Galerie Roger-Viollet invites us to enjoy a free exhibition featuring one of the great French artists of the 20th century.
