Usually, the doors of theformer Abbey of Saint-Denis are closed to the public, but on a few special occasions, they open to offer you exclusive guided tours to discover this little-known historical treasure.
The abbey was founded long ago, in the middle of the 7th century (according to the Office de Tourisme de la Seine-Saint-Denis): the first religious community of Benedictine monks settled here. Over the centuries, the abbots who successively ran the abbey undertook new works, such as those commissioned byAbbot Suger in the 13th century to redevelop the site. The original buildings were demolished and replaced under Robert de Cotte, giving the abbey a more classical, less medieval style. At the heart of the abbey is the cloister, a square-shaped space used by the monks for meditation and processions, with an interior garden.
Come and discover this exceptional site on the outskirts of Paris during guided tours on Sundays, December 3 and 17 , 2023, led by a local enthusiast! During a 1h30 tour, you'll learn all about the history of this unique abbey in Saint-Denis, and the many personalities who have visited it: King Dagobert, Louis XIV, Napoleon and, more recently, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Sophie Marceau. The tour costs €15 per person and is recommended for children aged 12 and over!
