Since it opened to the public in 2015 (more than twenty years after the first one was laid, according to Grand Paris Sud), the Evry-Courcouronnes pagoda has retained its top spot on the podium of Europe's largest pagodas. With its 3,300m² of floor space, the pagoda is a must-see in the town of Evry-Courcouronnes, in the French department of Essonne.
The building is so imposing, and stands out from the Paris urban landscape with its curved roofs, sunny yellow walls and tower, that it can be seen particularly well from the A7 motorway (heading towards Corbeil Essonne from Paris) or from trains departing from Gare de Lyon. On site, you'll discover (leaving your shoes at the entrance) the room dedicated to meditation, where traditional ceremonies take place, but above all, where a 4-metre-high statue of Buddha is enthroned.
In fact, the pagoda was even inaugurated by the Dalai Lama himself in 2008! Religious ceremonies take place every Sunday, from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., followed by a vegetarian meal (for a fee, according to Grand Paris Sud): every Sunday, the general public can enter from 12 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
