The Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes is adding to its rosy picture book with the arrival of two baby red pandas, born on June 12, 2025. It's a rare event that took place in June at the Menagerie, as these are the first births since 2013! The event takes place some time after the reintroduction of the species to the Jardin des Plantes(which we attended), as the young panda couple formed by Hazel (female) and Kosi (male) have just given birth to their very first litter.
The red panda is a threatened species, classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and is the subject of a major conservation program in European zoos. The cubs will continue to grow up in the Menagerie in the company of their parents, and in particular their mother, who plays the sole parental role in the species, before being entrusted to other European zoos as part of the reintroduction program, when they reach maturity.
Although shy, you may be lucky enough to come across them at the Menagerie!
