Do you like crumble? That's good, because asingle-product coffee shopin Pigalle is givingitpride of place! This British dessert, consisting of a layer of fruit—often apples—at the bottom of the dish and a layer of crumbly pastry, is universally loved for its simplicity and delicious taste.
In the 9th arrondissement, come and taste delicious crumble recipes in a comforting spot decked out in orange, created by Arnaud Vely, who loves crumble just as much as we do!
Passionate about cooking, he wanted to deconstruct this dessert and offer it as a DIY option, according to your tastes! For €6.50, you can choose between threeseasonal fruit compotes, two plain or oat crumble bases, and for an extra 50 cents, a gourmet topping of chocolate sauce, salted caramel, whipped cream or custard, and a variety of toppings including meringue pieces, pink pralines, pistachios, hazelnuts, or almonds, for even more sweet treats—which you can combine!
Of course, everything is homemade and the fruit used in the recipes is exclusively French, so it's always in season. When we visited in mid-November, we found apple-cinnamon, pear-chocolate, and plum-vanilla.
You can take your crumble to go or enjoy it in a pretty little ceramic pot, which is a generous size and perfectly balanced for both small and large appetites—perfect for us.
First, you choose your compote, kept warm in a pot. We opted for the traditional apple and cinnamon, which is not too sweet or too heavy on the cinnamon for those who are not fans, as well as pear and dark chocolate, which is far from bitter and even quite sweet.
A generous helping of plain crumble is added to these steaming fruits, because nothing beats the original recipe, before adding the irresistible topping.
While it's a shame that these little extras come at an additional cost, given how much originality and novelty they add to what is essentially a fairly simple dessert, don't miss out on the sweet, creamy whipped cream and vanilla custard, sprinkled with a little sugar to give it a crème brûlée feel, which is torched right before your eyes. We sprinkle some chopped pistachios on top to add a little more crunch!
The result is generous and sweet, and although you may be tempted to eat all the topping at once, you should dip your spoon in deep to find the fruit and enjoy the whole thing, which seems quite healthy as nothing is too sweet or sickly.
The textures blend beautifully, from the sandy crumble to the velvety whipped cream or the delicately caramelized crunch of the crème brûlée, as well as the melt-in-the-mouth fruit.
Only a small counter can accommodate 6 or 7 people on site, so the place—beautifully designed by Studio Norma with its adorable logo—is more suited to taking your crumble or drink away. You can also just come for a hot drink if you need to, but it's still recommended that you try the house specialty while you're there—it would be a shame to miss it!
Classic espresso, lungo, and cappuccino, hot chocolate, matcha, ube, chai latte, and other trendy drinks are on the menu. You can stop by for breakfast, dessert after lunch, or afternoon tea for a comforting and timeless snack!
