After a successful run in theaters, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, one of the Marvel family's latest feature films, is coming to Disney+. Ryan Coogler's film, winner of theAcademy Award for Best Costume Design, joins the streaming platform 's catalog on April 12, 2024.
After an introduction in the form of an obligatory tribute to Chadwick Boseman, the interpreter of Black Panther, who brutally died in 2020, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has to make a clean sweep of almost everything that made the first opus so as to be able to launch new intrigues, without its hero. A rarity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's a film that shines more for its superhero's absence than for its actions. This allows for a scenario that's a little more original than usual, in which the Wakandans, after the death of their king T'Challa, are pitted against a brand-new threat, the underwater kingdom of Talokan.
Despite its 2h47 running time, there's never a dull moment in this lore-rich second installment, in which we learn of the existence of another vibranium-based civilization living under the ocean. This people seem to have inspired filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who has a lot of fun depicting this visually impressive underwater world. Unlike Black Adam, released a few weeks earlier, Black Panther succeeds in creating a universe as credible as it is palpable, and doesn't confuse speed with haste in unveiling its stakes. It even introduces the character of Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne), an amusing ersatzIron Man, who will be the heroine of the IronHeart series, released last year on Disney+.
Nonetheless, this new opus fails to escape the most recurrent pitfalls of MCU films: special effects that sometimes sting the eyes a little and messy on-screen action scenes. A shame for a special effects action film...
