Fondation Louis Vuitton keeps promoting great art collections with the display of Samuel Courtauld’s collection from February 20 to June 17, 2019.
Big textile manufacturer and art collector, Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947, England) will quickly be interested in French modern art, Manet, Degas, Renoir and Cézanne, of whom he will greatly enjoy his work. He regularly comes to Paris to purchase impressionist works thanks to his adviser Percy Moore Turner’s network and creates a wonderful collection in only 8 years.
Among the treasures of this collection, Fondation Louis Vuitton gives pride of place to Manet A Bar at the Folies Bergère, Cézanne The Card Players, Gauguin Nevermore, Renoir La Loge, Degas After the Bath, Modigliani Female Nude, Van Gogh Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and ten J.M.W. Turner watercolors that belonged to Samuel Courtauld’s brother!
For a simplified and coherent reading of the exhibition, the tour is completed in chronological order and returns to the development of impressionism and post-impressionism from the 1860’s. Sections are dedicated to leading art figures, to Cézanne of whom Samuel Courtauld owns 13 works.
On the ast three floors and the Fondation terrace, we're presented the "A Vision for Painting" exhibition, a new selectoin of 70 works from the Louis Vuitton collection, brought together from the 1960's to nowadays. Painting is approached in all its diversity: figurative or abstract, expressive or kept at a distance.
In terms of artists, we have Joan Mitchell, Alex Katz, Gerhard Richter, Ettore Spalletti, Yayoi Kusama ou encore Jesús Rafael Soto. The idea of this selection is to show "how painting keep on reinventing itself and breaking its own rules, drawing in the current reproduction methods".
This exhibition is a unique occasion to find in Paris some of the greatest French paintings from the late 19th century, in the wonderful setting of Fondation Louis Vuitton.
