Climb up the Tour Saint-Jacques this summer in Paris

From June 30 to December 3, 2017, the mystic Tour Saint-Jacques, set within walking distance from Paris Hôtel de Ville, opens its doors to unveil its secrets. Last year guided tours welcomed over 5,000 visitors to discover this 54-m high tower of a medieval church featuring 300 steps.

From June 30 to DEcember 3, 2017, Paris takes its heritage up again by unveiling the Tour Saint-Jacques: this medieval tower built between 1509 and 1523, has been the Saint-Jacques church tower, starting point from pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela.

Built in Gothic style, featuring gargoyles and other decorative molding including the very hard bench called the “Liais” made of stone from the Saint-Leu (Oise) quarry. The Tour Saint-Jacques is located in full heart of Paris city, at the crossroads between several shopping streets: Rue Saint-Denis, Rue Saint-Martin and Rue des Ecrivains (current Rue des Rivoli).

We discover a tower full of history which has been the place for Pascal Blaise’s experiments, including the statue sculpted by Pierre Jules Cavelier in 1856 that remains in the square, as well as a jigger factory from 1824 to 1836.

The tower has been subjected to several development projects from the City in the 19th century. In 1853, historian N.—M Troche suggests turning it into a tower clock. Paris includes then Montsouris meteorological municipal observatory until 1898.

Finally, since 2014, Paris entrusted the Des Mots et des Arts agency to organize guided tours of the Tour Saint-Jacques, the goal of which is to perpetuate Parisian heritage future. The association offers to discover this medieval remains in an exceptional manner thanks to 45-minute long guided tours that will make you climb 54 meters up in the heart of Paris.
