A thunderclap over the skies of the Essonne (91), and this time it won't be pyrotechnic. The fireworks planned for July 13 and 14, 2026 in the department will not go ahead: the Essonne prefect signed, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, an order strictly prohibiting the firing of fireworks on all outdoor public and private spaces, from July 7 to July 15, 2026 inclusive. Festive fires, bonfires, and campfires are also banned.
The cause is a “very high” fire risk assessed by Météo-France, which has placed the département under red alert for wildfires, right in the middle of a heatwave. We detail all the measures in our article on the ban on fireworks and access to forests in Essonne.
With vegetation parched, temperatures hovering around 35°C, and gusty winds, conditions are ripe for a fire to start. Essonne is moreover one of only three French departments placed at the highest alert level, alongside Deux-Sèvres and Vaucluse.
"Due to the high risk of starting and spreading fires, three prefectural orders have imposed temporary restrictions and bans to protect people, property and natural areas", explains the Essonne prefecture. Access to woods and forests in the department larger than 0.5 hectares is also prohibited until July 15, as is entry to the Trois Pignons National Forest, which straddles Essonne and Seine-et-Marne.
Several municipalities had lined up festive evenings for this National Day 2026. While fireworks displays won't be possible, some animations (popular dances, torchlit processions, dancing evenings) may still go ahead: we recommend checking with your town hall before you go. Here are the programs that were initially announced, all affected by the ban:
