Vampire Carriages and Haunted Cellars at Dampierre Castle

For Halloween, the Domaine de Dampierre in the Chevreuse Valley opens its festively decorated basements to children and is staging a nighttime mystery for adults, from October 17 to November 2, 2026.

The Domaine de Dampierre-en-Yvelines, tucked away in the Yvelines (78), shifts into Halloween mode for the All Hallows’ Eve season, welcoming visitors for the Autumn holidays 2026. From October 17 to November 2, 2026, its Autumn Colors will mingle seasonal scenery, the château’s cellar visits for the curious youngsters, family-friendly activities, and two nights dedicated to the Night of the Castles. This estate is a familiar favorite: we were there just at the end of September for the Enchanted Garden of Pompadour, and we’re eager to see it dressed in orange again.

Nestled in the Chevreuse valley, just an hour from Paris, the château was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart at the end of the 17th century for the Duke of Chevreuse, Colbert’s son-in-law. Since 2020 it has been undergoing a major restoration, a storyline we follow season after season in our article on the transformation of the estate. Another reason to return this autumn, when the grounds don a new wardrobe.

What does Dampierre Castle have planned for Halloween 2026?

Throughout the season, the estate dresses itself in autumn and Halloween décor, to be explored along a stroll through the park and the gardens. More than 1,000 pumpkins are promised, turning the paths into a sprawling fairy-tale pumpkin patch.

The real wow is right beneath your feet. The castle’s cellars are open and decorated by day, with a moody, slightly spooky vibe. Everything is designed so kids can give themselves a few harmless frights as they explore—like grandma’s basement where the lights were forgotten to be turned on.

Several activities round out the visit:

  • The Vampire Carriages;
  • Pony-riding vampire apprentices, advance booking required;
  • The Natural History Cabinet, a children's activity offered in the afternoons with advance reservation;
  • A pumpkin-carving workshop, also available by advance reservation.

Nuit des Châteaux 2026: what's on in Dampierre on October 17–18?

Two major moments shape this edition. The first is the Nuit des Châteaux, on October 17 and 18, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. As night falls, the estate entirely changes its atmosphere, and you get that rare pleasure of strolling through a castle park under darkness. We cover this evening in our article dedicated to the Night of the Castles at Dampierre Castle. On the menu:

  • A concert on Saturday at 7:20 p.m.;
  • An equestrian show at 8 p.m. on both evenings.

The equestrian show sits well with the venue’s identity, which also houses the Attelages Museum. Horses have long been part of the backdrop here.

Expect €15 per adult and €10 per child aged 6 to 17 for these two special Halloween evenings.

“The Night's Guest”: what's happening in the park on October 30 and 31?

The starting point is captured in two lines, the sort of whispered tale people tell in the dark. More than three centuries ago, a young woman stepped through the gates of the estate. No one ever saw her leave again.

As night falls, the park becomes the stage for this disappearance. Participants follow in its footsteps, meet the people who spotted her that night, and collect clues along the route. The aim: piece together what really happened. You can already picture the park's towering trees as silent witnesses, black silhouettes against an October sky.

Departures run from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., every 15 minutes, for a roughly 50-minute investigation. This small-group format keeps the crowd down and preserves the atmosphere. The experience is open to ages 14 and up: kids enjoy the pumpkins in the afternoon, while adults swing by in the evening with friends or as a couple, sharpening their deductive instincts. Time slots can be booked on the billetterie en ligne du domaine, and it’s best not to leave it to the last minute—October 31st should be at the top of your list.

How much does the visit cost, and when's the best time to go?

The estate is open seven days a week, from 10:00 to 19:00 until October 25, 2026, after which it shifts to winter hours, 10:00 to 17:30. According to the official price list, park and gardens admission costs €10 for adults, €5 for ages 6–17, and free for under 6. Holiday-themed horse-drawn carriages come at an extra charge (€20 for adults, €10 for ages 6–17). Workshops and activities require advance booking through the online ticketing. To plan your visit, the site lays out access and transport details: driving remains the simplest way to reach this corner of the Chevreuse Valley.

A quick note to keep in mind: the castle interiors will be closed to visitors while work is underway; only the decorated cellars are open as part of the Autumn Colors program. Booking-required activities fill up quickly during holidays, so it's best to book early.

Why visit Dampierre Castle this Halloween?

Here you’ll find a human-scale Halloween experience, far from the long lines of theme parks. The little ones get their thrills without getting nightmares, while the older crowd can enjoy a well-curated park where autumn does the work on its own. This outing is primarily geared toward families with kids, but the after-dark stroll and the Night of the Castles also give adults a real reason to make the trip. Bring sturdy shoes and a light jacket: the paths are wide and October evenings turn chilly quickly.
