Nestled in the heart of the Vallée de Chevreuse, in the Yvelines (78), the château de Dampierre-en-Yvelines ranks among the great classical masterpieces of Île-de-France. Built between 1675 and 1683 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for the Duke of Chevreuse, son-in-law of Colbert, it is surrounded by gardens laid out by André Le Nôtre and preserves remarkable interiors, including the famous unfinished Ingres fresco.
For years out of the limelight, this jewel of pink brick and white stone—designated as a historic monument in 2022—has been undergoing a true renaissance. After years of dormancy, the estate is gradually reopening its doors and revealing itself anew with each season.
The Dampierre estate is the site of France's largest privately funded heritage restoration project. The work, launched in the early 2020s, began with the roofs and façades, then moved to the forecourt and its grand entrance grille, which has been restored by the master craftsmen of the Ateliers Saint-Jacques of the Coubertin Foundation.
The French-style gardens have also been excavated and completely rebuilt, just like the surrounding areas and visitor facilities (parking, ticket office). The result: we can finally enjoy an unobstructed view of the façade and the paved courtyard, free of fences and construction equipment.
This summer, the castle gave us a rare glimpse of its restored interiors. We were able to stroll through the central salon, which opens onto the garden and still awaits a few finishing touches, such as the plinth for its grand statue and its chandeliers. This room, unveiled in advance, is now closed again as the château prepares to reveal more of its spaces, but it will reopen in part for the European Heritage Days or for the masquerade ball. Note that prices vary depending on the animations.
Restoration work continues with the aim of opening a large portion of the castle as soon as possible and showcasing the owner's art collection, Franky Mulliez.
The season’s main highlight unfolds on Saturday, September 26, 2026, with two complementary events. From 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the Garden Party Enchanted by Pompadour turns the grounds into a grand outdoor fête inspired by Madame de Pompadour, featuring activities for children, performances, and a cavalcade (adults €18, children €10; period costumes are encouraged but not required). Starting at 7:00 p.m., the celebration moves indoors to the château’s Grand Salon for La Mascarade, a lavish masked ball that marks the 30th anniversary of the film Ridicule being shot on the estate (costume mandatory).
But the program doesn’t stop there. It kicks off on Sunday, September 13, 2026 with AUTOmnaL, the gathering of classic cars and motorcycles (from origins up to 1980) hosted by Renaissance Auto Rambouillet, with admission at €10. On September 19–20, 2026, the estate will take part in the Journées du Patrimoine 2026, featuring scavenger hunts and exhibitions (also listed in our Patrimoine Weekend program in the Yvelines). On Sunday, October 4, 2026, the event shifts to Les Collectionneurs ont du Cœur, and then, during the Toussaint holidays, to Autumn Colors, a stroll among more than 1,000 pumpkins in an autumnal, Halloween atmosphere.
Good news for visitors: the domaine de Dampierre will be open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., until October 25, 2026. It will then switch to its winter hours, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
On the ticketing side, the self-guided tour of the park and its gardens is €10 for adults at the full price, €5 for ages 6-17, and free for under-6s. A reduced rate (conditions apply) is available at €8.50 for adults and €4 for children. Regulars can opt for the annual pass, €40 for adults and €20 for ages 6-17, while groups are welcome by reservation.
To explore the park from a different angle, several activities are on offer: guided carriage tours (currently available on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, departing at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM), golf cart and rosalie rentals to traverse the estate, and free access to audio-immersive canes to enrich the way visitors discover the site.

On the dining front, the estate is rolling out a raft of experiences. For now, the Guinguette de Don Diego welcomes visitors daily from 12:00 to 18:00 (until 19:00 on weekends), with a relaxed, street-food–inspired menu.
Toward the end of October 2026, L'Honoré is expected to take over, adopting a dual identity as a restaurant and tea room. At lunchtime, the menu leans toward a refined brasserie cuisine—fresh, seasonal, concise, and regularly refreshed. In the afternoon, the tea-room spirit takes precedence, with new individual pastries crafted in collaboration with renowned regional pastry chefs, signature hot beverages, and “Tea Time” meetings.
Another project on the horizon: the reopening of the Auberge du Château and its restaurant, La Table du Château, hoped for before the end of 2026 (no date confirmed yet). Reimagined in the warm, elegant atmosphere of English inns, it will offer a bistronomique-inspired cuisine that showcases fine produce and seasonality. A homecoming for a venue whose restaurant earned Michelin stars for several years.
There’s something about that sense of renewal hovering over the estate: watching a monument of such scale come back to life, from the gardens to the mansion and through the rooms, is rare to witness—and the site is worth a detour for that alone. The park, vast and meticulously cared for, offers a moment to breathe between back-to-back heritage discoveries.
This outing is for history buffs and lovers of beautiful architecture, and for families seeking a nature-filled escape within an hour of Paris. A word of advice: keep a close eye on the schedule, because events like La Mascarade or the Nuit des Châteaux tend to sell out fast.
