Since its creation in 2011, the Musée de la Grande Guerre has taken part in the annual Heritage Days. For this 42nd edition, curious visitors are invited to join us on September 20 and 21, 2025, to learn more about the history of the First World War, thanks to previously unpublished collections carefully preserved by the museum team.
Through a chronological and thematic tour, suitable for children aged 7 and over, the museum helps us to understand how the world was toppled into this Great War, and how this conflict totally changed the face of the world, with its duration and violence of rare intensity.
This museum in the town of Meaux is dedicated to the First World War, with some 70,000 historical objects and interactive displays. This extensive collection is largely the result of research by Jean-Pierre Verney, a historian specializing in the Great War. Photographs, statues, military equipment, paintings, propaganda material, soldiers' uniforms... Through its exhibition spaces, the museum addresses the human, military and technical upheavals engendered by this war, from the viewpoints of different nations.
Accompanied by a member of the museum's conservation team, come and discover a space usually closed to the public: the reserves. Find out how the museum's collections are preserved when they're not on display, and learn more about conservation techniques. (on reservation, places are limited)
Horses played an important role in the First World War, both as working animals and as a comforting presence, and were an integral part of men's daily lives during the war. On the occasion of the JEP, the museum invites you to discover this exhibition free of charge, in the presence of a member of the museum's curatorial staff or a cultural mediator. (upon reservation)
In partnership with ECPAD, the museum is presenting a photographic exhibition on the use of gas masks during the war, in both military and civilian environments. Usually open to the public only, the museum is offering a guided tour of this fascinating exhibition during the YPD (booking required).
A visit to learn the museum's architectural and scenographic secrets, and discover how the new educational trench was conceived and built, and what objectives were pursued in offering this new space to the public. (booking required)
And if you're a history buff, make the most of the JEP to discover other testimonies to the past hidden in Seine-et-Marne.
