The Choiseul Library
France–America: A Journey from the Renaissance to American Independence
To mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, the Choiseul Library—housed in a historic building that hosted part of the 1783 negotiations between warring nations—has crafted a program that highlights the shared history of America and France.
For the occasion, four works commissioned from artist Redpaln, an army painter, will be shown in dialogue with the War painters' canvases that adorn this unique space.

Self-guided tour of the former Foreign Affairs Gallery
The Gallery of Honor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today home to more than 55,000 ancient works, has long stood as a high point of French diplomacy under Louis XV and Louis XVI. Also frequented by the era’s great dignitaries and built in 1763, it invites visitors to stroll through its five-room sequence, a setting remarkably well preserved and enriched by works from Louis-Michel van Loo, Jean-Jacques Bachelier, and Louis-Nicolas van Blarenberghe.
The Gallery of Honor was the stage for the drafting of the Paris and Versailles treaties (1783), which sealed the peace and the independence of the United States of America.

A Tour of the Countess du Barry's Hotel
Built in 1751 for René Binet, Louis XV’s chamber valet and a close ally of Madame de Pompadour, the townhouse was acquired in 1772 by Madame du Barry, who installed her household and her collections there.
After Louis XV’s death, the property passed to the Count of Provence, the future Louis XVIII, and throughout the 19th century it alternated among military and institutional uses.
Purchased in 1937 by the Versailles Chamber of Commerce, it was restored and officially opened in 1939 by President Albert Lebrun, and has since housed the Versailles-Yvelines Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Gonards Cemetery has been open since 1879. Spanning 12.5 hectares, it is a space that houses around 16,000 graves, including a few notable figures. Blériot, Cartier, Lépine... names steeped in history!
Thus, on the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the city of Versailles offers guided tours to discover these emblematic tombs, led by the head of the conservation team. The focus will be on the cemetery’s lower section, where the majority of the plots are located, providing a chance to see—or revisit—the enigmatic Angel of Silence.

Themed biodiversity tour at Gonards Cemetery
The city’s four cemeteries, including the Gonards Cemetery, have been managed in an eco-friendly, chemical-free way since 2009.
A management approach with multiple benefits for gardeners and visitors, as well as for the fauna and flora that populate these spaces.
As the first French cemetery to bear the EcoJardin label in 2012, the City of Versailles invites you to discover the species found in the Gonards Cemetery during the European Heritage Days, the habitats in which they thrive, and the actions in place to welcome them and ensure their lasting establishment.
This visit will, in particular, allow participants to explore the pond, created in 2021 and normally not open to the public.
The tour will conclude in the cemetery meadow with an introduction to the Operation Butterflies, a participatory survey dedicated to daytime butterflies, easily replicable in everyday life!

Guided tours of the Versailles Court of Appeal and a look at the judiciary’s organization and the roles of magistrates, court clerks, and registry staff. Justice opens its doors!
Set in a site rich with history, including the former Queen’s stables, the Versailles Court of Appeal offers five tours spread across the day. Each 30-minute session is led by a speaker from the Versailles Tourist Office and includes a detailed briefing of the building.
After each tour, visitors are invited to proceed to the Assizes Court room for a presentation on “Criminal Justice,” then to another room for an workshop dedicated to the “Professions and Organization of the Judiciary.”
For each workshop, judges, civil servants, and lawyers will be on hand to answer questions from the public.
The day is completely free of charge.

Accompanied by a guide, you will dive into the history and architecture of this emblematic 18th‑century Versailles Historic Monument: from a royal hospital to a cultural space.
To mark the theme Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine, discover the unique history and architecture of Charles-François Darnaudin (1741‑1793), how the hospital operated on a daily basis, the transfer of hospital services followed by a period of abandonment and deterioration, culminating in an ambitious rehabilitation project led by François de Mazières, Versailles’ mayor since 2008.
As part of this visit, the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences also opens the doors to the former oratory of the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul.

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, whose themes this year are “Heritage of Photography” and “Heritage in Peril: Rekindle, Resist, Reinvent,” the Lambinet Museum offers a discovery workshop led by a photographer from the School of Fine Arts.
Photography plays a pivotal role in understanding, studying, and preserving heritage. It helps document artworks, record their conservation status, and transmit the memory of places and objects.
After an introduction to these issues, participants will be invited to observe and photograph an item from the collections from different angles, in the spirit of real heritage documentation.
Beginners are welcome.

Visit the historic sites on American Independence Street in Versailles, accompanied by student mediators
On the occasion of European Heritage Days 2026, the Public Establishment of the Palace, Museum and National Domain of Versailles invites you to discover the historic buildings on Rue de l’Indépendance Américaine in Versailles.
The Grand Commun, the Hall of the Congress, the Cour des Bouches, the Cour de Monsieur, as well as the Hôtel de la Guerre and the Choiseul Municipal Library will exceptionally open their doors.
Throughout your visit, students will tell you the history of these places and Versailles’s role in American Independence.
At the end of your journey, you can access the Potager du Roi by passing through the Pièce d'eau des Suisses.
Inside the Palace of Versailles, continue your visit in front of the painting The Siege of Yorktown by Auguste Couder in the Galerie des Batailles and in the Captain of the Guards’ rooms redecorated for the 250th anniversary of American independence. Students will be waiting for you there.

The Grand Commun, the Congress Hall, the Courtyard of the Bouches, the Cour d’Honneur of Monsieur, as well as the Hôtel de la Guerre and the Choiseul Municipal Library will also open their doors to the public for one day only.
A free online scavenger hunt invites you to explore the street by piecing together an abandoned notebook of which several pages are missing.

On the occasion of European Heritage Days, the president and the public prosecutor invite you to step inside the Versailles judicial court. Along with other members of the judiciary, they offer guided tours led by court officials, who will introduce you to the buildings that make up the courthouse and explain how justice works in everyday life.
