The Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) take place every year in September, offering a fabulous program of guided and self-guided tours, often free of charge, as well as unique events at the heart of some of our finest heritage treasures.
Museums, monuments, castles, churches, institutions and much more, many cultural venues are playing their part for the occasion, including in the Paris region! While Paris is a real eye-catcher, the rest of the Île-de-France region also has plenty to offer enthusiasts and the curious, with its lesser-known heritage that's well worth the detour!
On the doorstep of Paris, you’ll notably find the town of Sceaux, in the Hauts-de-Seine. Located within easy reach of Navigo, this town famed for its namesake estate is steeped in history. Patrick Roger's Workshop
A chocolatier, sculptor and artist, Patrick Roger—named Meilleur Ouvrier de France in 2000 and knight of the Legion of Honour since 2018—opened his first shop in Sceaux in 1997. Today he stands as a fixture of the French cultural scene, as essential to national heritage as craftsmanship is to France’s patrimony. His workshop, the creative hub feeding his Île-de-France boutiques, will be open to the public.

The Lakanal School Campus hosts the Charles Koechlin Instrumental Ensemble, conducted by Marc Deleplace, with Jean-Pierre Salmona at the piano, for a program of varied works: Quintet for Winds by Carl Nielsen, Rhapsody by Joseph Jongen with piano, and Sextet with piano.
The concert is organized by the Association of Friends and Alumni of Lycée Lakanal (AAAELLK).

Guided tour of Lycée Lakanal
A tour of this prestigious educational institution, built as a model high school starting in 1882. The visit showcases emblematic sites such as the rugby murals (a heritage-listed painting), the war memorial, the gym, the lycée’s park and its remarkable trees, with an added highlight on Saturday afternoon of the science building. There will also be activities with the JJJ Rigal Engraving Association (marking the 100th anniversary of its founder) and the Friends of Jean Couy (paintings).

Renaudin Nursing Home

In the town center, the Renaudin Hospital, built in 1895 by architect Jacques-Paul Lequeux, still stands ready. Decommissioned, it remains an architectural landmark of the pedestrianized heart of the town and a chapter in the history of a Parisian family of architects who settled in Sceaux during the early phases of its subdivisions. It bears witness to the social mission of the Fondation Renaudin and to a slice of the city’s life.

An Evening with Patrons and Partners
A FIRST RESTORATION CAMPAIGN
The initial restoration campaign, focused on the villa's roof terraces, is estimated at €226,000.
These urgent works mark the first step in a broader project: restore the house, create a therapeutic garden and set up an annex to welcome the public, host educational and cultural activities, workshops and gatherings.
European Heritage Days offer us the chance to publicize this project, meet its future supporters and rally around the Villa a mix of private individuals, companies, Foundations, schools and cultural or social partners.
A NIGHT FOR PATRONS AND PARTNERS
The project presentation evening is held in the presence of Matthieu Gillet, the heritage architect in charge of the restoration.
This limited-attendance meeting is primarily aimed at companies, foundations, major donors and partners looking to make a meaningful commitment alongside the Villa.
The visit will allow attendees to tour the house, understand the urgent works and engage directly about the overall plan: patrimonial restoration, Jardin de Lucia, open to the public and new cultural, educational and social activities.
The evening will continue with a convivial apéritif.
Attendance by invitation only and after confirmation by the organizers.

Open Garden: Young People Envision Lucia's Garden at Villa Trapenard
A HERITAGE TO KEEP ALIVE
Built in 1932 by Robert Mallet-Stevens and designated a Historic Monument, Villa Trapenard now needs restoration while continuing to live on.
For European Heritage Days, its exterior spaces transform into an open-air participatory laboratory. Children, adolescents and families are invited to contribute to designing the future Jardin de Lucia: a sensory garden with therapeutic aims, attentive to the different ways of perceiving, feeling, learning, remembering, moving and connecting with others.
IMAGINING DIFFERENTLY
Understanding a plan, drawing, or expressing an idea in space isn’t natural for everyone. This day therefore offers alternative ways to envision a garden.
In Villa’s outdoor areas, several experiences will be freely accessible. Visitors can move at their own pace, participate, observe, linger for a few minutes or take longer. There will be no imposed sequence or final route to complete.
Young participants will be able to explore the garden through gesture, motion, sounds, scents, textures, colors and life-size construction. They can imagine places for solitary time, for two, or for groups, test activities related to gardening, observation, memory and creation, and indicate what they would like to see— or avoid— in the future garden.
Observing without taking part, declining a sensation or preferring a quiet activity will also count as a form of contribution.
This day is a journey of discovery and co-design; it is not a daycare or a therapeutic workshop.
FROM HANDS TO GARDEN PROJECT
The choices, gestures and sensations of participants will feed into a collective composition and may become concrete guidelines for the architects, landscape designers and future garden facilitators.
These contributions will help shape calm and communal spaces, light and shade, paths, water, sounds, plants, materials and future activities.
EXPANDING THE SENSE OF HERITAGE
Villa Trapenard is not merely a building to preserve. It invites us to consider multiple heritages: architectural, landscape, living, sensory and human.
Preserving the Villa means restoring its architecture with rigor, but also imagining its surroundings, its uses and the audiences it could welcome tomorrow.
A DAY OPEN AND FREE
The event takes the form of an open garden, with no fixed-time workshops. Families are welcome to arrive freely during the listed hours.
The day is mainly geared toward young people aged 6 to 17, but parents, guardians and architecture-, landscape-, neurodiversity-, education- and nature-wellbeing enthusiasts are welcome.
Children remain under the supervision of their accompanying adult. The event takes place outdoors; the house itself is not open for visits that day.
Safety note: visitors are asked to stay mindful of a dry basin in Jardin de Lucia, which poses a risk of slipping or tripping and should be navigated with care.
A small exhibition will tell the Villa’s story, its transformations and the restoration project. A reading corner and a refreshment area will accompany the day.
