  • Interview with the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker

In 1980, after studying dance at Brussels' Mudra School and then at New York's Tisch School of the Arts, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, born in 1960, created Asch, her first choreography. Two years later she made an impression with Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich. In 1983 she choreographed Rosas danst Rosas and established her Brussels-based company Rosas.

Building on these foundational works, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has continued to probe, with rigor and prodigious output, the relationships between dance and music. With Rosas she has assembled a substantial repertoire that confronts musical structures and scores from every era—early music, contemporary, and even popular forms. Her choreographic practice rests on the formal principles of geometry and mathematical patterns, the study of the natural world, and social structures, opening distinctive perspectives on how the body unfolds in space and time.

Conversation led by journalist Laura Cappelle.
