Back in January, Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, put forward a new idea to be implemented in the capital, to"improve road safety and the difficult cohabitation between pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, cabs, delivery vehicles and buses" . To this end, she would like to create a"code of the street" in Paris, to be complied with on a mandatory basis. Presented by the City of Paris on June 28, this code will be put to the vote of elected representatives at the next Paris Council meeting, next week.
According to the City, the Code de la rue will take the form of a "document that recalls the essential rules to be respected, and provides new communication tools to publicize them". It will be accompanied by concrete awareness-raising initiatives in public spaces and schools. The city also indicates that the municipal police will be deployed in greater numbers to punish any incivilities or infractions.
The Code de la rue sets out 12 essential rules, which can be found on the city's website, and puts pedestrians first, with "zero tolerance for sidewalk infractions". Numerous measures are to be found in this Street Code, which could rapidly come into force, if voted by the City Council.
