With the opening of 68 new stations in the Paris region between now and 2030, the Grand Paris Express project promises to be a colossal undertaking. While most of these future stations will be built underground, some will be built above ground. Here's a look at the future aerial sections and stations of the Grand Paris Express.

In addition to extending line 14, the Grand Paris Express network will open four new metro lines (15, 16, 17 and 18), and is eagerly awaited by many Île-de-France residents who use public transport on a daily basis. But before you can use this new network, there's a lot of work to be done in the Paris region, such as on line 14, which has been subject to numerous closures in recent months.

At present, the famous journeymen are hard at work underground to complete these major works and enable these future lines to see the light of day by 2030. While most of these future stations will be underground, some will actually be on the ground. On lines 17 and 18 of the Grand Paris Express, for example, overhead sections are planned " around viaduct sections that will eventually become emblems of the future network ", explains Société du Grand Paris, the company in charge of designing and building the Grand Paris Express, on its website. But where exactly will these aerial stations be built? We answer!

We start with line 17, which will link " Saint-Denis Pleyel " in Seine-Saint-Denis to " Le Mesnil-Amelot " station in Seine-et-Marne in less than twenty-five minutes. On this line, a viaduct is to be built to create the " Parc des Expositions" overhead station, located in the communes of Villepinte and Tremblay-en-France, and connected to the RER B and several bus lines. What's special about this future station? " An all-metal framework designed by the architectural firm Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes ", explains the French building and civil engineering group NGE, in charge of building the overhead section of line 17.

In detail, the " Parc des Expositions " overhead station will culminate at a height of 21 meters, while the platforms will be 14 meters high, " topped by a roof open to the sky, allowing passengers to benefit from natural lighting ", states Société du Grand Paris in a brochure detailing the layout of this future overhead station.

Line 17 is 26.5 km long and, when fully inaugurated in 2030, will feature a total of 5.5 km of overhead track, beginning at the exit of the " Triangle de Gonesse " station and extending as far as Tremblay-en-France, before plunging back underground before the Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport area. This above-ground section of line 17 will cross the A1 and A3 freeways, route départementale 40 and RER B tracks.

Another Grand Paris Express line will also unveil an overhead section: line 18, which will facilitate travel for the inhabitants ofEssonne and Yvelines, and link Versailles Chantiers to Orly airport.

Of the 35 km of line 18, the metro will run overhead over a distance of 14 km, with the first section scheduled to run between the " Palaiseau" station, located at the corner of avenue de la Vauve and boulevard Gaspard Monge, and the " CEA Saint-Aubin" station, at the Christ de Saclay crossroads. On this section, a 6.7 km viaduct is under construction.

The " CEA Saint-Aubin " station, located near the Saclay Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the " Orsay - Gif " station, part of the Moulon ZAC (joint development zone) developed by the Établissement public d'aménagement Paris-Saclay, and the " Palaiseau " station, nestled in the Ecole polytechnique ZAC, will all be overhead.
