Last spring, in March 2023, ZooSafari de Thoiry welcomed three baribal cubs from the same mother. We were able to observe them playing, climbing trees and having fun together once they emerged from their den in April. Now fully-grown, they're out and about on the safari. This year, to their great surprise, the zoo's caretakers discovered a new birth when the cub came out of its den with its mother.
For a surprise, no one at Thoiry Zoo was expecting to see a bear cub accompanying its mother out of the den. However, a baribal bear cub was born this winter, unnoticed by the zoo's caretakers. Indeed, with the very rainy winter we had in the Île-de-France region, the baribal bears suffered a few inconveniences. After a heavy rainstorm, the den was flooded, and one of the female baribal bears had to leave it, accompanied by her tiny cub: it was then that the caretakers realized the birth had taken place!
At the time of this surprise outing, the baby weighed 700 grams: now he's grown to 3 kilos. For the moment, the little bear has no name, but he can be seen on the safari circuit in Thoiry Zoo's American Reserve, or if you decide to spend an unusual night in one of the zoo's dens.
