On Sunday, September 10, 2023, the animal keepers at Thoiry ZooSafari had the pleasant surprise of discovering two newborn pinched tamarins, a critically endangered species that lives at the zoo.

Since September, ZooSafari has seen the birth and growth of two baby pinched tamarins: encouraging news for this critically endangered species. This exceptional birth is a real victory for the zoo's teams, as tamarins are one of the 25 most endangered primates in the world.

To enable the species to reproduce, Josephina, the mother, joined Thoiry Zoo in February 2023, to form a couple with Tristan, the father, who came from Sweden in 2021. The zookeepers had high hopes that the two tamarins would hit it off (which isn't always the case!), and this proved to be the case with the birth of the couple's very first litter in September 2023. Pinched tamarins usually live in the tropical forests of Colombia, but for several decades now, the species has been the subject of a conservation program, as deforestation for agriculture, industry or the expansion of large cities has reduced its natural habitat by 75%.

Every year, Thoiry Zoo welcomes a number of new arrivals. After the litter of baribal cubs, the spectacled bear cub and the other births of the year, two little lionesses have just come out for the first time in September 2023. [Read more]

Illegal trafficking of wild animals has not helped the survival of the species either, which is now in a critical state and is the subject of a European breeding program, with a view to reproducing and conserving the species in zoos across Europe. During your visit, you'll be able to observe these adorable balls of fur, still clinging to their parents' fur!
