Issy-les-Moulineaux: A new casino on the outskirts of Paris?

A casino just a subway ride away in the inner suburbs of Paris? The town of Issy-les-Moulineaux, in the Île-de-France region, is currently considering such a project. We tell you all about it!

As you may already know, there are some 200 casinos in France, but none in Paris. In fact, they're forbidden! At the beginning of the 20th century, legislators wanted to prevent workers from being tempted to gamble. In 1919, it was even decreed that casinos were forbidden within a 100 km radius of the capital.

There is one exception, however, and that's the casino at Enghien-les-Bains: thanks to its status as a spa town, the Val d'Oise municipality is able to host the only legal venue in the Paris region. Access is subject to a fee. Legislation at the beginning of the 20th century stipulated that casinos should be reserved for elegant locations synonymous with relaxation, in this case spa towns and seaside resorts.

In addition to the Casino d'Enghien-les-Bains, since 2018, an experiment has been underway in Paris with the opening of gaming clubs, a kind of half-casino that essentially includes games of quid pro quo and poker. Games of chance such as roulette are prohibited.

In the town of Issy-les-Moulineaux, located west of Paris in the Hauts-de-Seine department, the town's mayor, André Santini, in turn aims to contribute to the casino's return to the Paris region.
