The French Cinematheque announced on Friday, November 28, 2025, that it will temporarily close its four cinemas. The reopening is scheduled for January 2, 2026, as the venue prepares to implement health and safety measures. But what’s the reason? Over the past few weeks, some moviegoers have reported spotting bed bugs during their screenings. The Cinematheque says it will "strengthen its prevention and treatment protocols" to tackle these pests.
This measure has been taken "to ensure a completely safe and comfortable environment for all viewers." The Cinémathèque Française explains that "all seats will be dismantled and individually treated with dry steam at 180°C several times, before undergoing systematic canine checks to validate each stage," as will the carpets, to prevent this problem from recurring.
The other areas of the Cinémathèque Française remain open, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the current exhibition, My Name is Orson Welles. Film retrospectives in the Cinémathèque's theaters will resume on January 2.
