Living in one municipality and working in another can grant you specific voting rights. But does that mean you can cast two votes in local elections? The law is very clear on this matter. Here's what you need to know.

When it’s revealed that, under certain conditions, you can vote in a municipality where you work, even if you don't live there, a natural question immediately arises: is it possible to vote both in your home municipality and in the work municipality? In other words, can you vote twice?

This question often comes up, especially among professionals who work in a city different from where they reside. When it comes to electoral law, there’s no ambiguity. Here’s an explanation.

One voter, one municipality, one vote

In France, the fundamental principle of voting rights is straightforward: a voter can only be registered on one electoral list. It is strictly forbidden to vote twice in the same election, even in the case of municipal elections. Even if someone qualifies to be registered in multiple municipalities — for instance, due to both their residence and employment — they must definitively choose only one municipality for registration.

A Decision to Be Made Upfront

The voter concerned must decide whether to register in their residential municipality or their work municipality, where the law permits. This decision may require a voluntary removal from the previous electoral list before completing a new registration. Double registration is prohibited and can lead to if fraud is proven.

A Strict Legal Framework

Voting twice is indeed considered a violation of the Electoral Code, punishable by legal action. Today, electoral rolls are largely digitized and cross-checked nationwide, significantly reducing the risk of multiple registrations. Therefore, even though the law permits some flexibility regarding the registration location, the right to vote remains strictly personal and exclusive. This rule is fundamental in ensuring the fairness of local elections.
