As many people plan to take advantage of their long weekend to escape, the weather could put a damper on the celebrations. Because of a disturbance, Météo France has placed Paris and the rest of Île-de-France under a yellow thunderstorm alert for this Friday, May 1, 2026. We take a look at the forecast.

You’ve probably noticed it, Paris hasn’t seen rain in a long time. In fact, the capital just endured one of the driest Aprils on record, with only 6.4 mm of rainfall. But the outlook should change in the hours ahead, as a week-end prolongé de trois jours approaches.

According to Météo France, rain is set to return beginning this Friday, May 1, 2026. "After a morning that will likely be cloudy in the west, with a few showers, thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon over the Centre, Normandy, and Île-de-France, before moving back toward the Hauts-de-France by the end of the day," the meteorological service warns.

Météo France has placed 32 departments across mainland France under a yellow storm alert. The list includes the Somme, Seine-Maritime, Calvados, Orne, Eure, Oise, as well as Loiret, Yonne and Cher. As La Chaîne Météo notes, these storms "will generally stay local and fairly typical for the season," but they "could nevertheless bring heavy rains at times, a few gusts of wind and thunder, though without any large-scale, sustained organization." Moreover, the regions affected by these storms will unfortunately not be able to fully enjoy the "Flower Moon," regarded as one of the year’s most intense full moons.

What weather can we expect for the rest of the weekend?

But what can we expect for the rest of the weekend? Will the May Day weekend be spoiled by this new disturbance? On the morning of Saturday, May 2, light showers are expected in the northwest of Île-de-France. While skies will be cloudy in the afternoon, more rain could move into Val-d'Oise and Yvelines on Saturday evening.

Finally, Sunday, May 3, the weather will stay damp with showers forecast for the morning and again in the afternoon across much of the Île-de-France region.

What to do in case of thunderstorms?

Due to this yellow alert for "thunderstorms" issued by Météo-France, it is important to reiterate the usual safety guidelines to follow, such as avoiding outdoor activities, not sheltering under trees or under an overhang, and not driving on flooded roads.
