Frank Michael, the renowned Italian-Belgian crooner famed for his hit "All Women Are Beautiful," has died this Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 79, from lung cancer, his daughter confirmed.

The realm of sentimental French chanson loses one of its most distinctive voices. Frank Michael, born Franco Gabelli, died this Friday, June 12, 2026, at 79, after a battle with lung cancer. The news was confirmed by his only daughter, Sandra Gabelli, on social media. The Île-de-France public knew him well, having filled the Olympia in Paris’s 9th arrondissement on numerous occasions.

His name is sometimes spelled "Franck Michael," but the artist signed his albums as Frank Michael. Behind this pseudonym lies an extraordinary career, conducted far from television studios and yet crowned by more than ten million records sold.

Who was Frank Michael, the Italian-Belgian crooner?

Born on May 7, 1947, in Bedonia in the Parma province, Franco Gabelli left Italy at a young age. His family settled in Seraing, near Liège, where he grew up. His career kicked off in 1974 with his first 45 rpm single, and two years later he notched his first big hit with "Tell Him I Love Him."

Soon nicknamed "the ladies' singer," he commands an audience that’s around 90% female and has stayed loyal for half a century. His refrains celebrate love and women, from Toutes les femmes sont belles to "La Force des femmes," including "Après tant d'amour" and "Pour toutes les mamans."

Its hallmark is a success built without any media exposure. Rarely invited to radio or TV, he nonetheless racks up between 100 and 200 galas a year, winning over generations of spectators thanks to nothing but word of mouth.

What did Frank Michael die of?

The singer has died from a particularly aggressive lung cancer. He passed away just a few months after the launch of his farewell tour, announced in 2024 to celebrate 50 years in the business.

According to his longtime producer Enzo Falzone, who had been by his side for 46 years, his final concert was held in a church in Bischwiller, in the Bas-Rhin, just before his death. A discreet curtain call that mirrored his entire career.

Frank Michael at the Olympia, a steadfast presence on Parisian stages

Paris has long been a centerpiece of his career. Capable of filling the Olympia for several consecutive nights, Frank Michael has graced the legendary stage on Boulevard des Capucines 22 times over the years, a record that speaks volumes about the fervor of his fans.

Three live albums captured at the Olympia punctuate his discography, recorded in 1999, 2001 and 2003. In 2007, he drew more than 5,000 fans to the Palais des Sports at Porte de Versailles, and also played the Palais des Congrès at Porte Maillot. Sortiraparis followed his Paris stops, notably during his Olympia shows.

You can read the notice of his death on the RTBF site, as well as the details of his career on his biography page. With around forty gold records and a repertoire that made thousands of concertgoers dance, the Italian-Belgian crooner leaves a lasting imprint on Francophone popular music.

It's a truly grim day this Friday as news breaks of the deaths of David Hockney and Charlie Dalin, while the funeral of Bernadette Chirac takes place on the same day.
