Cardboard metro and RER tickets in Paris and Île-de-France will not disappear on June 1, 2026 as planned. Île-de-France Mobilités has pushed back their end date to autumn 2026 to give users time to use up their stock. If you have any left, don’t throw them away!

Cardboard tickets in the Paris metro and RER still have a few months to go, at least. The end of these small magnetic tickets, originally slated for Monday, June 1, 2026, has been pushed back to autumn, as ICI Paris Île-de-France has learned. Île-de-France Mobilités says it wants to give users a few extra months to use up their stock, while not yet announcing a precise date.

A piece of news that directly affects Île-de-France travelers who still have a few ticket booklets tucked away in a drawer or in their wallet. No need to toss them: they remain valid on the metro and at intra-Paris RER stations until further notice.

Cardboard tickets pulled from sale as of November 2025

T+ tickets and Origin-Destination passes stopped being sold in November 2025. In buses and trams, they’ve already bid farewell: they’ve been rejected since May 1, 2026. Only the Île-de-France metro, RER and train networks still grant this additional grace period.

It's fair to say their use has become largely negligible. Magnetic tickets now account for just 0.15% of validations, according to IDFM. A figure that underscores how far they've come since their introduction in 1973.

What should you do with your old cardboard tickets?

Two options are available for users who still hold them. The first, simplest: use them for the metro or the RER before autumn 2026. The second: exchange them at an RATP or SNCF ticket counter. Exchanges are possible until September 1, 2026, limited to 5 tickets per day, in return for a Metro-Train-RER or Bus-Tram equivalent loaded onto a Navigo Easy card. Note: cash refunds are not available.

What are the alternatives to the cardboard ticket in Île-de-France?

Several options are available to occasional travelers. The Passe Navigo Easy, sold for 2 euros at all ticket machines and counters, lets you load Metro-Train-RER tickets at 2.55 euros each, or Bus-Tram tickets at 2.05 euros each (2026 rates). For more frequent users, the subscription Navigo Liberté+ allows paying upfront for all tickets used in the month. Finally, the apps Île-de-France Mobilités or Bonjour RATP enable storing these passes directly on a smartphone. No more frantically hunting for a ticket in your pockets at the turnstiles.
