Set in the heart of the Latin Quarter, the Great Mosque of Paris marks a century this week. While the cornerstone was solemnly laid on October 19, 1922 at 2 p.m., the Great Mosque of Paris was officially inaugurated on July 15, 1926, the day after the national holiday, in the presence of President Gaston Doumergue and the Moroccan sultan Moulay Youssef.
Through this project, the French state sought at the time to pay homage to the 100,000 Muslim believers who died for France. “If, by any chance, someone doubted the essential solidarity that binds the Islamic world to the Western world; if he even ignored the tragic days when Franco-Muslim friendship was sealed in blood on Europe’s battlefields, only the sight of this assembly—where the Muslim elite and the French elite share in the same ceremony—would dispel his doubt and strengthen his heart. The French Republic acknowledges and protects all beliefs. Whatever path a human being has chosen toward their ideal, that path is sacred to us. We respect it and we surround those who follow it with equal solicitude,” had, after all, declared Gaston Doumergue at the inauguration.
A century later, this Hispano-Moorish architectural jewel, a genuine religious, philanthropic and cultural institution, holds a special place in the hearts of France's Muslims, since it is the oldest mosque in metropolitan France.
On July 15, 2026, the Grande Mosquée de Paris marks its centennial and unveils a live ceremony to celebrate the occasion. The religious venue says the celebrations will kick off this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and can be watched on the Grande Mosquée de Paris’ YouTube, Facebook, and X accounts.
"The centenary we are about to celebrate recalls this pledge of brotherhood and marks the civic engagement of Muslims in France, past, present and future", the Grand Mosque of Paris said on its website.
