On September 17, at Saint-Exupéry High School in Créteil, Val-de-Marne, a group of teachers walked off the job to protest staffing shortages. They were soon joined by a handful of students. Since then, the movement has spread across France, with many high schools blockaded nationwide. Last week, the protests surged once more. According to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, 356 high schools were blocked on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
Facing mounting protests, three high school student unions were received on October 2 by the Minister of National Education, demanding, among other things, the abolition of Parcoursup, "an emergency plan for the school estate" to make study conditions "livable" and "decent", the reform of school hours, or a massive hiring plan for teachers "to act immediately on the 10% of unfilled hours". Leaving the meeting disappointed, they called for the mobilization to continue with an "Act 3" scheduled for Tuesday, October 6. The high school unions also announced a large national demonstration.
In response to the announcement, the CGT, FSU, Solidaires confederations and FNEC-FO union have urged people to join, on October 6, the mobilization by high school and university students.
As it already does in front of schools, the CGT will stand alongside mobilized high school students, university students, and education staff on October 6. It calls all of its organizations to safeguard the right to mobilize and to provide the means to organize, notably by opening the labor exchanges and the houses of the people to allow them to meet, by ensuring the security of the protests, and by submitting authorization requests in collaboration with high school and student organizations, the CGT said.
The FCPE, the federation of affiliated parent associations, has also urged people to join demonstrations alongside high school students on October 6, 2026.
The Confédération paysanne calls on farmers to "join the high school students' tractor protests on Tuesday, October 6".
