Astronomy: a total lunar eclipse in September - when to watch the Blood Moon?

Three eclipses await us this year, including two total lunar eclipses on March 14 and September 7, 2025! A spectacle that many budding astronomers will be able to observe, as the star takes on a beautiful reddish hue.

If you like to observe the sky, the planets, the stars and the Moon, then the following may well interest you. This year, 2025, is a godsend for astronomy enthusiasts, as a partial solar eclipse graces us with its presence, alongside two lunar eclipses, this time total, one on March 14, the other on September 7. And unlike 2022, when it was too light to observe the longest eclipse of the century, this year these two phenomena will take place at the end of the day and in the middle of the night!

As a reminder, during a lunar eclipse, the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, preventing the latter from receiving the Sun's light. As a result, the Moon takes on reddish hues, giving it the name"Blood Moon", thanks to the Earth's atmosphere, which allows only the red and orange waves of light to pass through. For the first time, you'll be able to observe it from France and Europe as early as 3:57 a.m., with the most beautiful show from 6:26 a.m. to 7:31 a.m. at dawn on March 14.

If you miss this one, a second one will appear, this time in the evening of September 7, with a complete phase between 7.42pm and 9.56pm, and the highlight of the show at 8.11pm, bearing in mind that by the time it appears, it will already be slightly eclipsed. It will therefore be possible to observe its gradual emergence from the Earth's shadow.

You don't need special glasses for this eclipse, but to observe this celestial phenomenon in the best way, find a place with a really clear view of the eastern sky. Make the most of it, because the next eclipses of this magnitude will take place in 2028!
