For the 22nd edition of the Night of Museums, the Musée du Luxembourg will be open late into the night on Saturday, May 23, 2026. A perfect opportunity for Parisians and art enthusiasts to explore the historic building and enjoy the current temporary exhibition.
Every year since 2005, the Nuit européenne des Musées is an opportunity for art lovers to push open the doors of legendary museums throughout France, free of charge, from dusk until midnight. For an entire evening, the most curious can enjoy exclusive tours, screenings and exceptional events. It's a unique opportunity for the French to visit their favorite museums for free by night!
Few Parisians know that the Musée du Luxembourg was the first French museum to be opened to the public in 1750, and in 1818 became the first museum of contemporary art. Initially housed in the Palais du Luxembourg, it moved to a purpose-built annex in 1884... The museum has no permanent collections, and its life depends on the temporary exhibitions it organizes and hosts.
Leonora Carrington's (1917-2011) body of work is deeply influenced by her travels, culminating in her settlement in Mexico, where she became celebrated as one of the most prominent artists of her time. Her extraordinary life journey, along with her rich intellectual universe, echoes contemporary themes such as war, exile, feminism, as well as spirituality and mysticism.
For the European Night of Museums, French-Mexican dancers and choreographers Paulina Ruiz Carballido and Stéphanie Janaina will present throughout the evening a series of performances they describe as "ironic witchcraft." These acts engage in dialogue with the surreal universe of Leonora Carrington, blending dance and song in Tu’un Savi (Mixe language). These works provide a glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of Mexico's cultural cosmology.
