Every year on the same date, June 21, the French gather to celebrate music in all its forms. For over 40 years now, the country has made a habit of getting together in the streets, in parks and gardens, and in concert halls, bars and restaurants to celebrate music!
For the record, the Fête de la Musique was created in 1982 on the initiative of the French Ministry of Culture. That year, the Ministry of Culture's studies and research department conducted a major survey of French cultural practices. It revealed that five million people, including one young person in two, play a musical instrument. So Jack Lang, architect and scenographer Christian Dupavillon, a member of his Cabinet, and Maurice Fleuret came up with the idea of a major popular event to enable all musicians to express themselves and make themselves known. The very first Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21 1982, the symbolic day of the summer solstice.
Since then, the Fête de la Musique has become one of the most popular, festive and cultural events in the country. Every year, concerts are held all over Paris, as well as in the inner suburbs.
Comprising three departments in the Paris region - Hauts-de-Seine (92), Seine-Saint-Denis (93) and Val-de-Marne (94) - every June 21, the inner suburbs of Paris play host to a wide range of music, from rock and rap to electro, jazz, blues and reggae.
