Les Pires trailer

For a first film, this is an impressive achievement. Directors Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret have already demonstrated their mastery. In this feature-length film, they explore the concept of wild casting, which has been used for years in cinema. Bordering on documentary, they tell the story of a film shoot in Boulogne-sur-mer, northern France.

Several of the town's troubled youngsters are selected to star in the film, while the other residents can't understand why the director chose"the worst". Both very funny and moving, these young people with difficult lives will be greatly shaken by this shoot, which sometimes echoes their own lives.

For once, we have the impression of seeing a film about housing estates, where the people who live there are neither clichés nor social rejects. The characters of the young amateur actors are endearing and touching as they reveal themselves throughout the film, and their flaws emerge.

Les Pires is about cinema, precariousness, city life (and for once, a city that's not in the Île-de-France region, a fact that's rare enough to be highlighted), reputation, and the film speaks well of it. The film is one of our favorites of the year.
