Released in theaters on March 15, 2023, 65, The Earth Before is an action and science fiction film written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo best known for scripting A Quiet Place. Produced by Sam Raimi (the Spider-Man trilogy, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), the film stars Adam Driver, Ariana Greenblatt, and Chloe Coleman. It will be available on Netflix starting March 15, 2026.
After a space mission gone wrong, pilot Mills crashes on a planet that feels familiar yet strange. He quickly realizes the unthinkable: he hasn't landed on an alien world, but back on Earth… 65 million years before our time. In this hostile environment, he soon understands he’s not alone: Koa, a young survivor, has also escaped the crash.
To reach the only area where rescue seems feasible, Mills and Koa must navigate treacherous terrain filled with prehistoric creatures. Amidst natural hazards, sudden attacks, and a race against the clock, their survival hinges just as much on instinct as on their ability to work together.
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods approach the film as a tightly crafted genre story, blending action, suspense, and tension with a deliberately minimalist style: implying the threat rather than revealing everything it entails. Their approach echoes the techniques seen in Jaws and their work on Quiet Place. Meanwhile, Sam Raimi emphasizes the emotional core of the story, centered around a father-daughter relationship between Mills and Koa, serving as the driving force behind the characters' journey.
The production is backed by a budget estimated at $90 million, with a focus on practical effects and on-location filming. Portions of the shoot took place in the forests of Oregon, including Golden Falls, where challenges related to lighting and access were addressed by director of photography Salvatore Totino. The creatures were brought to life with the help of Neville Page, known for his work on Avatar, Star Trek, and Tron. The soundtrack is composed by Danny Elfman, a long-time collaborator of Raimi.
Starring Adam Driver—equally at home in both auteur cinema and big franchises—the film delivers a tense sci-fi survival story where action drives a narrative of isolation and connection. Fans of creature features and suspense will appreciate its concise format, focused on impact and pacing, echoing the tradition of dinosaur movies that have long held a unique place in the world of blockbuster cinema.
