A homecoming reveals the distances that have grown within a family. Your Maternal Animal, written and directed by Valentina Maurel, is in French cinemas from October 7, 2026. The film reunites Daniela Marín Navarro, Marina de Tavira and Mariangel Villegas.
After studies across Europe, Elsa returns to Costa Rica and finds her younger sister, Amalia, alone in the family home. She worries about Amalia's esoteric beliefs and seeks her parents' support. But their father is tied up in his romantic life, while their mother is preparing a reissue of the erotic poems she wrote in her youth.
Elsa's return brings to light the expectations and the rifts within a mother and her two daughters. The film juxtaposes their ways of living, their concerns, and the bonds that still tie them together.
Presented in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival 2026, Ton animal maternel earned a collective Best Actress prize for its three actresses. This Belgium–France–Mexico co-production is distributed in France by JHR Films.
