Cannes Festival 2024: Greta Gerwig, President of the Jury for the 77th edition

After shaking up the box office last year with her film Barbie, American director, screenwriter and actress Greta Gerwig is taking on a new role as President of the Jury for the 77th Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 14 to 25, 2024.

A native of Sacramento, California, Greta Gerwig has climbed the industry ladder to become a figure of international cinema. Long an icon of American independent cinema, the filmmaker has succeeded in fusing art and industry - as demonstrated by her film Barbie. With the latter, she became the first director to break the billion-dollar box-office barrier.

"Greta Gerwig boldly embodies the revival of world cinema, of which the Cannes Film Festival is both a precursor and a sounding board," say Iris Knobloch, President of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate. "Beyond the 7th Art, she also appears as the representative of an era that abolishes borders and mixes genres to make intelligence and humanism triumph."

With this role as President of the Jury, she becomes the second female director (after Jane Campion in 2014), the second American (after Olivia de Haviland in 1965), the second youngest personality (after Sofia Loren in 1966) and above all the first American filmmaker to hold this prestigious position.

As a cinephile, Cannes has always been for me the pinnacle of what the universal language of film can represent. Putting myself in a state of vulnerability, taking my place inside a darkened room full of strangers to watch a new film, is what I prefer.
