Japan's most famous detective makes his comeback in Detective Conan - The Black Submarine. The 26th adaptation of the soon-to-be-30-year-old manga hits cinemas on August 2.
And for this new adventure, the film looks more like James Bond than Sherlock Holmes, its original inspiration. This time, little Conan Edogawa finds himself involved in a major case, aboard the "Pacific Buoy", an offshore installation not far from Tokyo that links police security cameras from all over the world. This technology soon attracts the attention of the Men in Black, the organization behind Conan's rejuvenation. They'll do anything to get their hands on it, and of course, both Conan and Ai Haibara are in great danger, as the organization can now track them down.
For once, there's no real police investigation, as the manga published almost thirty years ago has accustomed us to, but a real race against time and against the Men in Black to escape death. Our heroes are in trouble, and once again, they'll have to rely on Conan's genius to get them out of it.
What's surprising about this new opus is that it's very adult. Deaths, kidnappings, a scenario that's quite complicated for youngsters to follow. The authors of this 26th adaptation are well aware that fans of Detective Conan are no longer children, and that's a good thing! Of course, the film is not immune to the shortcomings of its predecessors: the obligation to retell the whole Conan story so as not to lose newcomers, the desire to include all the cult characters from the manga, and animation that keeps to the bare minimum. However, fans will be far more satisfied than with previous adaptations, which lacked any epic breath of fresh air.
This time around, we're treated to plenty of action, and the story has a strong link with the quest that Conan has been pursuing since the very first volume. This story could well become part of the saga's official canon, and aficionados will appreciate it all the more. It's not a whodunit, but a true action thriller with a very modern approach. However, the ending is a little abrupt.
