Espace DANAE in the 1st arrondissement presents a free manga exhibition dedicated to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. From October 1 to 5, 2025, we can discover contemporary works of art on limited-edition metallic canvas.

Ghost in the Shell, the visionary work that profoundly influenced the world of science fiction and manga, takes over Paris for the first time with a free contemporary art exhibition. From October 1 to 5, 2025, the DANAE space in the 1st arrondissement will host this exceptional exhibition dedicated to the Stand Alone Complex (S.A.C.) series. As the only European destination on this international tour, Paris once again establishes itself as a major crossroads where Japanese culture meetscontemporary art.

In collaboration with the Japanese gallery GAAAT, which specializes in the encounter between pop culture and contemporary art, this manga exhibition presents iconic scenes from the series from a new angle. The works presented are produced on metallic canvas, a medium that reinforces the futuristic, cyberpunk dimension of the universe created by Masamune Shirow. Each piece is a certified limited edition, produced under official license, giving them a special value for collectors and fans of the work.

The touring exhibition has already won over Asian audiences at its stops in Taipei and Singapore, with considerable success. After Paris, it continues its journey to the United States, with stops in Los Angeles, Seattle and Chicago. This world tour bears witness to the growing influence of manga on the international cultural scene, and its recognition as an art form in its own right.

The event takes place at 17 rue du Bouloi, a stone's throw from the Louvre and the Palais Royal, in a district that itself embodies the meeting of history and modernity. A press and VIP day will be held on Wednesday, October 1, from 5pm to 8pm, before opening to the public from Thursday, October 2 to Sunday, October 5, from 12pm to 8pm. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended via the official website.

Why is Ghost in the Shell still such a major work?

Created in 1995 by mangaka Masamune Shirow and adapted into a cult animated series by Production I.G., Ghost in the Shell revolutionized the cyberpunk genre. The work explores avant-garde themes such as identity in the digital age, the fusion between human and machine, and artificial consciousness. Questions that resonate with disturbing topicality in the age of artificial intelligence and the digital transformation of our societies.

The Stand Alone Complex series, broadcast in the 2000s, deepened the universe with complex investigations led by Section 9, an elite anti-cybercrime unit. Its influence extends far beyond Japan: the Wachowskis' Matrix was openly inspired by it, as are many contemporary science-fiction productions.

What is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex?

The year is 2030. The advent of cyberbrains and cyberbodies has given rise to new forms of crime, and Public Security Section 9 has been created to fight back. Known as S.A.C., this is the first Ghost in the Shell TV series, directed by Kenji Kamiyama and featuring 26 episodes. Set in a world parallel to that of Oshii's film, a world in which Motoko has not merged with the Puppeteer, the series explores avant-garde themes such as identity in the digital age, the fusion between human and machine, and artificial consciousness.

The Laughing Man story arc, which forms the core of the series, was compiled in 2005 in an opus entitled Stand Alone Complex: The Laughing Man. The influence of this work extends far beyond Japan: the Wachowskis' Matrix film was openly inspired by it, as are many contemporary science-fiction productions.

How are these works on wire cloth created?

Timeless beauty for an interactive visual experience. The metallic canvas is an original creation by GAAAT, using high-quality, durable metal and exclusive printing methods that ensure each work retains its brilliance for life. By exploiting an exclusive data design and multi-layer UV coating technology, the gallery manages to develop vibrant colors as well as complex textures.

The creation process is particularly elaborate. Up to 32 layers of data are stacked on a single digital illustration file using proprietary technology, creating a millimeter of relief. Guided by the artistic intent and visual impact of the original, a team led by the art director determines where and how to create depth. The result is to transform flat digital content into a work of art endowed with dimension and presence.

The three-dimensional texture changes appearance depending on the angle of the light, transforming a flat digital work into a piece full of relief and depth. The use of metal canvases resists humidity and ageing, guaranteeing great durability. Industrial materials, rarely used in fine art, add boldness and long-lasting brilliance. Each piece undergoes rigorous quality control by expert craftsmen and benefits from an uncompromising finish.
