The birth of photography unfolded in stages, thanks to several visionary and brilliant inventors. It is generally regarded, however, that Nicéphore Niépce is the father of photography: between 1826 and 1827, he succeeded in permanently fixing light to reproduce a real-world image.
Two hundred years on, the Ministry of Culture is aiming to mark this milestone with a sweeping national cultural celebration. From September 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027, hundreds of exhibitions, talks, festivals, gatherings and workshops will take place across France. Photography in all its forms will be celebrated, to the delight of professional photographers, enthusiasts, and anyone who simply appreciates this art.
In Paris and the Île-de-France region, several exhibitions are being staged as part of this special bicentennial. Some are already open to the public!
