Just a short stroll from the Louvre, tucked away in the Palais-Royal, ZEN offers a true immersion into the heart of Japanese cuisine. This discreet address in the 1st arrondissement, Michelin-recognized for years, unfolds its world across three levels where tradition and modernity meet with elegance.
From the ground floor, a bright, minimalist dining room welcomes guests in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The open kitchen lets diners watch the chef and his team in action, adding a dynamic, immersive dimension to the experience. The basement offers a more intimate space, with a warm, wood-toned, cosy vibe.
As for the first floor, reservations are required and it delivers a premium experience with a brand-new, upscale OMAKASE menu. Here, the team is predominantly Japanese, from the kitchen to the service, making this spot a true little slice of Japan in the heart of Paris.
At the helm of ZEN, chefMitsuru Yamada embodies authentic, meticulously crafted Japanese cuisine. Trained in Japan and Paris, he pursues a precise, balanced approach that blends tradition with finesse, guided by a single principle: elevate the ingredients and spark emotion with every plate.
At lunch, ZEN feels like an elegant Japanese canteen, with a €28 set menu that’s as generous as it is polished: an amuse-bouche, sashimi of exceptional freshness, then a main course chosen from the day's selection.
The experience captivates from the very first bite, refined and delicate, before giving way to melt-in-your-mouth sashimi that’s flawless. The warm dishes offer instant comfort: salmon teriyaki, softly lacquered; grilled mackerel with crispy skin; or golden, juicy fried chicken.
Donburi also win over fans: katsu don pairs the crunch of breaded pork with the silkiness of egg, while unagi don, with its caramelized eel, delivers a depth of flavor that’s almost addictive.
In the evening, an izakaya vibe
As night falls, ZEN shifts into a different rhythm and channels a Tokyo izakaya vibe. The table fills with small, shareable dishes, and you’ll nibble with real pleasure.
The takoyaki, still steaming, reveal their molten centers, while the crispy gyoza release their aroma with every bite. The sesame tofu, silky and delicate, contrasts with the vibrant tang of vinegar-dressed octopus.
Then come the heartier dishes: a melt-in-your-mouth eggplant bathed in a subtly sweet miso glaze, perfectly caramelized teriyaki chicken, or a tender, fragrant beef tataki finished with a tangy ponzu sauce.
Tempura are light and crispy, adding that irresistible touch that always wins over diners.
Desserts that bridge France and Japan
On the dessert menu, ZEN leans into a Franco-Japanese fusion with an indulgent yet refined selection. The Japanese-inspired fraisier impresses with its lightness, while a tofu cheesecake made with soy milk, served with house-made jams, offers a subtly less-sugary alternative.
The green tea and red bean tiramisu adds an original touch, while the fruit salad or the ice creams (green tea, black sesame, vanilla or yuzu) wrap up the meal with a refreshing note.
ZEN confirms its status as a trusted benchmark for Japanese cuisine in Paris, blending tradition, precision and generosity. Lunch is always busy, so arriving early is wise; in the evening, a reservation is highly recommended.
