Head for Paris's 10th arrondissement to discover Onigami, the very first Parisian restaurant entirely dedicated to onigirazus. Open since July 2025, this new street food counter revisits the Japanese sandwich. We tested it and tell you all about it.

Onigami marks a first in Paris with its Japanese onigirazus. Set up in the 10th arrondissement in July 2025, this new counter offers a gourmet alternative to traditional sandwiches. Anaïs and Marine, the two founders, left their offices to embark on this culinary adventure, which grew out of Anaïs' trip to Hong Kong.

The concept is seductive in its simplicity and originality. Onigirazu is a Japanese rice sandwich with a protein, vegetables, crudités and sauce, wrapped in nori seaweed. Weighing in at 250 grams, it's a complete meal to be enjoyed cold, cut in half to reveal its colorful layers. And we have to admit, it's quite a success!

What exactly is an onigirazu?

Onigirazu is a Japanese sandwich whose basic ingredients are an onigiri, a rice ball stuffed with meat or fish, and a sheet of nori, a Japanese seaweed. Larger and more filling than a traditional onigiri, onigirazu combines the convenience of the Western sandwich with the delicacy of Japanese cuisine. Unlike onigiri, a typical Japanese snack often shaped like a triangular rice dumpling, onigirazu is simpler and a bit like a rice burger, only healthier.

At Onigami, six original creations make up the menu: Salmon with its secret tartar sauce, Shrimp with tropical flavors, Marinated Chicken with curry sauce, Caramelized Tofu with Korean influences, Tamago Egg revisited in Japanese style and Chickpea with vegetables with a spicy character. In soft opening for summer, 4 recipes opened up to us during our visit.

A story of reconversion

The Onigami adventure began when Anaïs and Marine met in 2024, thanks to a mutual friend. Anaïs, who had spent a year as an expatriate in Hong Kong, where culinary influences come from everywhere, was looking for an innovative concept when she returned. She loved onigiri, but felt that it was already well known, so she refocused on onigirazu, less developed but more aesthetic and generous. Marine, with her CAP in cooking and already a foot in the food business, joined her in this entrepreneurial adventure a year ago. Together, they quit their jobs to devote themselves to this project, which reflects their personality. They collaborated with Japanese chef Misaki Frankel to develop the first two basic recipes, which now form the basis of their entire range.

The restaurant is aimed primarily at workers in the 10th arrondissement, opening mainly at lunchtime on weekdays. This strategy offers a fresh alternative to the usual office offerings, far from the usual sandwiches, pizzas and burgers. And it's a pleasant change!

On the spot, you can choose to order at the counter or use the two touch-screen terminals to save time. Onigami is also available for delivery via Uber Eats and Deliveroo.

An accessible and varied offering

Prices remain affordable, with onigirazus priced between 6 and 8 euros each. Lunch formulas, including side dishes and dessert, range from 10 to 14 euros. You can choose an onigirazu with a side or opt for a box of three halves from the range, ideal for discovering different flavors.

The side dishes are not to be outdone: eggplant, tamago egg, mushrooms or coleslaw complete the experience. As for desserts, the menu is pleasantly surprising, with a Ube and speculoos tiramisu that we've tried and approved, and a healthy, low-sugar mango and chia seed dessert.

Where can you discover Onigami?

This offer is similar to rice burgers, but healthier and just as nourishing. We like the well-seasoned and spicy pickles, the generous salmon and the vegetarian chickpea version, which doesn't fall short of the mark. Onigami has succeeded in transforming the lunch break with these Japanese sandwiches that are as beautiful as they are good, and a welcome change from the usual classics. We'll go there with our eyes closed!

Onigirazu, sometimes nicknamed the "Japanese sandwich", is gradually gaining recognition in Paris. Following the success of onigiriz, Onigami is now offering a more generous and aesthetically pleasing version.
