One of the most highly anticipated series on Disney+ at the end of 2023, and among the platform’s first big-budget productions outside the Marvel and Star Wars universes. Season 2 features Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri in the roles of Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, alongside Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, and Daniel Diemer. It also boasts an extensive cast of recurring and guest stars, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jason Mantzoukas, Courtney B. Vance, Andra Day, Adam Copeland, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho, Toby Stephens, and Rosemarie DeWitt.

With season 3 already confirmed, Disney+ is reaffirming its commitment to making Percy Jackson and the Olympians a lasting fixture by gradually bringing the entire book series to the screen. The show has now established itself as a key pillar of youth and fantasy content on the platform, bolstered by a highly engaged and passionate fanbase.

Our thoughts on Season 1:

If you're already a fan of the beloved book series, there’s little doubt that this new show, helmed by Rick Riordan himself, will win you over! Unlike the two movies released in 2010 and 2013—both of which the author has openly disliked—Percy Jackson & the Olympians stays deeply faithful to the books and is packed with references, offering a real treat for those who’ve read everything. Some scenes even seem to be direct copies, word for word, and you can easily sense the author's influence, not least in the casting choices, which reflect the characters’ personalities quite well.

On the flip side, the episodes do feel somewhat short, with around thirty minutes each, giving the impression that there’s little room to explore scenes in depth. This sometimes results in dialogue that feels a bit staged, especially at the start of the season, lacking naturalism. However, things improve in the second half, as the young cast seems to better convey their characters’ emotions on screen. Overall, the series feels a bit rushed, though this is likely to improve in future seasons.

As for the action scenes, they currently lack technical flair and visual impact, but it’s important to remember that the actors are young and will have time to hone their skills. Interestingly, Percy fights a god with more ease than some of his peers! A big win for the special effects, which deliver impressive and high-quality monsters—ranging from minotaurs to harpies. In summary, this is a series that will undoubtedly delight fans of the novels and appeal to younger audiences, though we hope for a faster pace and more dynamic storytelling in the next season!
