The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is back on Disney+ with a highly anticipated second season set to premiere on December 10, 2025. Directed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and produced by Rick Riordan, it brings to life the novel The Sea of Monsters. Every Wednesday, viewers could follow this new adventure inspired by the second book in the series.
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover must cross the Sea of Monsters to save their friend and the Half-Blood Camp, which is under threat from the collapse of its magical barrier. Their journey will bring them face-to-face with formidable mythological creatures and introduce them to new allies, including Tyson, Percy’s cyclops half-brother.
Season 2 promises a new chapter filled with darker, more emotionally charged mythological adventures, as Percy’s journey expands into an even larger universe. The main cast remains led by Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood. Daniel Diemer joins the cast in the role of Tyson. The executive producers include Jonathan E. Steinberg, Dan Shotz, and Craig Silverstein.
The filming took place in Canada, primarily in Vancouver, from March to September 2025. The visual effects are being handled by Industrial Light & Magic.
Our Review
Like the first season, this follow-up remains faithful to the books and takes a completely different approach from the initial film adaptation! This time, the cast has grown up and the series delves into more complex and darker themes, delivering a plot filled with tension and sprinkled with a bit of Rick Riordan’s characteristic humor. Walker Scobell nails Percy’s character perfectly, capturing his loyalty and impulsiveness with impressive depth for someone of just 17.
The tone shifts to be much less childish, and some divergences from the original novels allow the series to explore the flaws of the Greek gods and how these affect their demigod children. This results in more violent scenes than expected, including intense battles and betrayals. Each character faces an inner dilemma, and the fate of the world hinges on multiple key decisions rather than a single one. Viewers are thus invited to experience conflicted emotions towards Luke, especially through flashbacks that shed more light on the characters’ backgrounds.
The relationship between Percy and his demi-brother offers touching moments, while the hints of future romance with Annabeth are already palpable, conveyed through memorable lines. Fans might wish there were more underwater scenes—and more monsters—in a film titled "The Sea of Monsters," but Blackjack’s appearance was sure to delight longtime followers.
The main downside is the episode length… Unfortunately, some scenes seem to be missing for those familiar with the books, as around thirty minutes doesn’t quite suffice to cover everything thoroughly. While the pacing improves over the previous season, with more intense action sequences, it’s a pity not to have a longer season to enjoy one or two extra episodes.
Though the cast had already hinted at filming a second season, Disney+ officially announced one at the end of the final episode, scheduled for 2026, accompanied by a fun trailer. Here’s hoping season 3 continues this momentum and eventually brings the entire saga to screen!
