In the words of Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival since 2007, the festival's Séances Spéciales section showcases works that are "more personal" than those in competition. Such is the case with Raoul Peck's new documentary on the life and work of South African photographer Ernest Cole.
In this documentary, soberly entitled 'Ernest Cole, photographe', Raoul Peck portrays the man who was South Africa's first independent photographer, and whose photographs revealed the injustices of Apartheid to the world. After being banished from his homeland, Ernest Cole went into exile in the United States.
President of Femis for almost 10 years, the Haitian director and documentary filmmaker returns to the documentary genre, 8 years after I Am Not Your Negro, about the Black American struggle for civil rights. The latter won the César for best documentary film in 2018.
Raoul Peck's new documentary "also brings the past into the present, the past being that of Apartheid. It's great to see again what South Africa was like at the time, just like Mandela's face, which runs through the film," explained Thierry Frémaux.
