The Cannes Film Festival 2026, running from May 12 to 23, has unveiled its official selection, to the delight of future festivalgoers... and cinephiles of all stripes! Among the titles expected on the Croisette, The Beloved by Rodrigo Sorogoyen (El ser querido) already promises to be one of the films to watch closely at this unmissable gathering of international cinema.
Let’s be clear: the previous film from the Spanish director, the excellent As Bestas, drew strong critical acclaim and wide audience appeal in theaters and on streaming platforms. That title had its Cannes debut in 2022 on the Croisette, in the non-competitive Cannes Première section.
This year, the man who presided over the Critics Week in 2025 raises the bar, with a selection in the official competition. The film is thus in the running for the Palme d'Or.
Synopsis : A world-renowned director, Esteban Martínez, returns to Spain to shoot his new film. He offers the lead to a young, unknown actress—his daughter—whom he hasn’t seen in thirteen years. The young woman seizes the opportunity, but knows that this shoot will force her to confront a man she could never regard as a father. The weight of the past threatens to reopen old wounds.
