Get ready for liftoff! The Cinémathèque française teams up with the CNES (the French space agency) to present an exceptional cycle that fuses 120 years of interstellar travel and science fiction on the big screen, from September 30 to October 19, 2026. From the original poetry of Georges Méliès (Le Voyage dans la Lune) to modern epics like Seul sur Mars by Ridley Scott, through the hypnotic Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky or the intimate Proxima by Alice Winocour, this program explores the cinema’s fascination with the cosmic immensities.
Throughout these three weeks, many sessions will be introduced and unpacked by leading figures in space research. Astrophysicists, exobiologists, specialists in space debris, and even the renowned astronaut Claudie Haigneré will pit directors' visions against the latest scientific knowledge.
The younger audience isn’t forgotten and will get a dedicated segment! Kids from ages 6 will be able to rediscover on the big screen the animation gem WALL-E on Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 PM. The day before, Saturday, October 3, two hands-on workshops will plunge young creators into the magic of cinema: the “Monsters of Space” workshop will introduce 7- to 9-year-olds to frame-by-frame animation (stop-motion), while teenagers aged 13 to 15 will try their hand at staging and lighting effects with “Chills in Space.”
