Expedition: Saving Our Oceans follows researchers from the coast to the deep sea, united by one question: how can we better understand marine environments to protect them? Katharine Arthy’s documentary, announced for Disney+, draws on expeditions conducted by the National Geographic Society with Rolex across the five ocean basins.
The missions combine scientific instruments with the knowledge of coastal communities. In the Seychelles, Sheena Talma is training a local team to use underwater cameras to observe deep-sea habitats. This work will enable researchers and residents to better document the archipelago’s marine areas.
The film also features DORIS, an observation device developed by Katy Croff Bell and the Ocean Discovery League to make deep-sea exploration more accessible. Produced by Offspring Films for National Geographic, it is narrated by Auliʻi Cravalho, known for voicing Moana in the original version of the Disney film.
