Centuries before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the battle of Hyrule enters a new generation: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Ultimate Edition will launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on February 25, 2027. Developed by Omega Force, the studio behind Koei Tecmo Games, and published by Nintendo, this remaster revisits the tactically driven action title that first appeared in 2020. Announced during the Nintendo Direct on September 9, 2026, it will pair technical enhancements with all DLC content and a new difficulty mode.
The trailer unites Link, Zelda, Impa and the four Champions to take on Calamity Ganon's forces. The sequences switch from cinematics to Musou-style battles, with hordes of Bokoblins, Lynels and other beasts faced off using combos, special techniques and Sheikah runes.
The presentation mainly highlights the changes coming with this Nintendo Switch 2 version. Resolution and frame rate will be improved, and more enemies can be displayed simultaneously during battles. The video also introduces the Blight quest, which was absent from the original edition.
The narrative revisits the period leading up to the kingdom’s fall, as Calamity Ganon threatens to wipe out Hyrule. Link, Zelda, Daruk, Mipha, Revali, and Urbosa rally their forces before the Calamity seizes the Divine Beasts and the Guardians. Nintendo sums up the conflict in these terms: "Lead your forces into battle and face the power of Calamity Ganon in the ultimate struggle for the kingdom’s survival".
Unlike the main installments of The Legend of Zelda, this game centers on large-scale battles. Each character comes with their own combos, weapons and special techniques to wipe out groups of enemies while completing the objectives listed on the battlefield.
Players can dodge at the last moment to land a counterattack, charge a fatal-blow gauge, or use elemental staves. The modules Cinetis, Cryonis, Polaris and the long-range bombs from the Sheikah Slate also unleash different attacks depending on which hero you pick. Between missions, the materials you collect are used to upgrade weapons, cook dishes that grant bonuses, or unlock services on the map of Hyrule.
The new Plague quest will raise the overall level of challenge. In this mode, enemies will be tougher and more numerous, while healing items will be less effective.
This edition brings together the main campaign and both waves of the expansion pass. It includes, notably, the seasoned Guardian, the duo of Pru’ha and Faras, another playable fighter, new weapons, additional abilities, and several narrative missions. The total number of playable characters rises from 18 to 21.
Save data from the Nintendo Switch version can be carried over to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition. Owners of the original game will also receive a discount on the digital purchase, the exact amount of which has yet to be revealed. The transfer will not work in the reverse direction, and add-on content purchased separately on Nintendo Switch will not be compatible with this new edition.
Local two-player co-op will be kept. GameShare will also let you play on two consoles in either local wireless multiplayer or online via GameChat, using a single copy of the game. Digital pre-orders are live on the Nintendo eShop as of September 9, 2026.
The French price and the discount reserved for owners of the 2020 game are yet to be announced. Nintendo’s upcoming communications could also more clearly outline the visual and technical gap between the two editions during the most demanding battles.
