Square Enix has unveiled a new trailer and release date for Foamstars, an innovative multiplayer shooter. Planned for PS4 and PS5, the game will be released on February 6, 2024. A game that offers a unique combat experience using foam as a strategic tool, a bit like a certain... Splatoon! We've tested it, and we'll tell you all about it!

A rich evening for Square Enix at the PlayStation State of Play... On September 24, 2023, the publisher announced a trailer for its multiplayer shooter, Foamstars, for PS4 and PS5, reminiscent of Nintendo's Splatoon. Presented with great fanfare by Sony Interactive Entertainment, this innovative game offers a unique four-versus-four experience, where foam becomes the ultimate weapon and tool for attacking, building and defending. On January 31, 2024, a new trailer awaits you, unveiled by PlayStation on the occasion of the latest State of Play. From February 6, 2024 onwards, we'll be lathering up like never before online!

Foamstars trailer unveiled at the latest State of Play :

The first Foamstars trailer captivated gamers with an array of vibrant, unique characters battling it out in intense foam arena battles. Foam, an essential resource in the game, offers players a variety of strategic uses. They can create slippery surfaces for fast movement, shape the terrain to defend against enemy attacks, or even submerge the opposing team under an avalanche of foam to win the game.

Foamstars presents an original, playful approach to the shooter genre that challenges players to think strategically and use their environment creatively.

Our opinion on Foamstars:

What do we think of Foamstars, the PS5 counterpart to Splatoon? ? Plenty of good things, even if Splatoon isn't for everyone. Here, we won't mention the "single-player mode", which is anecdotal and only there to help you get to grips with the controls, once you've done the tutorial. The whole point of the game lies in its crazy, dynamic multiplayer mode.

Smash the Star is a fast-paced 4x4 multiplayer mode in which you'll have to devise a variety of strategies to achieve victory. Games are played in two phases: the first requires you to eliminate seven opponents, in order to bring up the opposing team's "Star", who is then shot in the second phase of the game, intensifying the game as you have to defend your team's Star (if it's not you) while taking care not to get "lathered up". It's fun, it's fast... Everything we love.

As for the roster, it's pretty well thought-out and balanced, with each character having his or her own moves, while retaining the same gameplay. We also appreciate the ultra-benevolent nature of the universe, as well as its battles, which create a healthy sense of competition. We also appreciate the eclectic, ultra-modern soundtrack.

So, sure, it's no Splatoon, but Square Enix has come up with a software that does the job, especially for gamers who don't have a Nintendo Switch and want to enjoy this type of game. Just give it a try if you haven't already.
