A new Nintendo Direct was broadcast on June 21. This was an opportunity for the famous Japanese firm to unveil its next major titles and releases for the coming months. Among the many announcements, one of them may have reminded you of something... Super Mario RPG is coming to Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2023.
This game isn't exactly new... In 1996, Japan and North America discovered Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The very first role-playing game in the Mario universe, which never made it to Europe. Now it's time to discover this opus, in an improved and modernized version, with brand-new graphics.
" Join Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach as well as original characters Mallow and Geno in an RPG full of twists, turns and treasure. Mario must team up with his allies to face down the terrible Forgeroi gang and retrieve seven stars to repair the Road to the Stars. "
The trailer shows us a playful RPG, set in Mario's various colorful worlds. The moustachioed plumber teams up with Princess Peach, Mallow and Geno, as well as the terrible Bowser, to get his hands on a magic star. The game also features turn-based combat, with numerous enemies to defeat.
This battle system, revised and improved for this Nintendo Switch version, is gradually revealed in the trailer revealed at the Nintendo Direct on September 14, 2023. As a result, you can combine attacks, or inflict damage on several enemies at the same time, if you respect the right timing. What's more, some of the game's bosses can be faced again once the story is over. But beware: they will have gained in power during this second encounter...
Our Super Mario RPG review:
Super Mario RPG is a surprising game in several respects: first of all, its story is a far cry from the games in the franchise, since here, apart from the fact that you play as Mario and have to save Princess Peach, it's a far cry from a platform game... And that's a good thing! A game that features turn-based combat, rather like the RPG aspect of Mario & Luigi: Journey to Bowser Center.
Then, as already mentioned, the game's surprising gameplay will make you think a little about the strategies to adopt, since you'll be able to play several characters during combat phases, including two new ones(Mallow and Geno). On the other hand, turn-based combat can be a little off-putting, leaving little room for exploration. This is counterbalanced by the often amusing dialogue and mimicry (remember, Mario doesn't speak), which is always well delivered. We also appreciate the synchronized actions during battles, where pressing the A button at the right moment gives you a bonus (among other things).
What's also nice about the gameplay is that it progresses fairly quickly, leaving no time for boredom. Note also the possibility of "crafting" your characters and leveling them up, granting you new attacks. A fine proposition on paper, but not necessarily very well developed in the end, which is a little frustrating.
Graphically speaking, as with its previous Mario opuses, Nintendo' s gameplay remains on a par with its predecessors: beautiful and well-realized. A truly beautiful remake that's fun to play, while retaining its retro charm - and that's all we're waiting for! In short, Super Mario RPG is a lovely game, no doubt about it, despite its few shortcomings. It's ideal for anyone who hasn't experienced the benchmark game, released in 1996 on Super Nintendo. Get your Joy-Con!
