Directive 8020 thrusts Supermassive Games’ space-bound survival horror into orbit! Developed by the studio behind Until Dawn and The Quarry, and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, this new entry in The Dark Pictures universe is available on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S since May 12, 2026. The game leans into a tense sci‑fi atmosphere where exploration and survival play out far from Earth.
"Earth is dying, and humanity has its back to the wall. Located 12 light-years away, Tau Ceti f offers a last glimmer of hope... but when the colonial ship Cassiopeia crash-lands on the planet, the crew quickly realize they're not alone. Pursued by an alien organism capable of mimicking its prey, the Cassiopeia astronauts will have to outwit their predators. To survive, however, they will have to face the ultimate dilemma and risk the lives of all Earthlings. In space, death can take many forms".
The gameplay of Directive 8020 leans into more visceral horror, powered by Unreal Engine 5 and fresh stealth sequences. Players assume the role of Young, an astronaut portrayed by Lashana Lynch (James Bond, Captain Marvel...), aboard the starship Cassiopeia. The mission quickly spirals into a fight for survival when an alien organism capable of mimicking its victims sows suspicion among the crew. In this setup, every move, every decision and every encounter can become a risk.
Another gameplay innovation is the Turning Points mechanic. This feature allows players to return to certain key moments in the story to modify their decisions, explore other narrative branches or discover missed scenes. Will Doyle, Creative Director at Supermassive Games, explains: " We wanted to give fans more control, replayability and ways to discover every layer of the story. For the more adventurous, Survival Mode offers an experience with no turning back, where every choice becomes final.
The digital Deluxe version of the game also adds an enriched cosmetic and narrative dimension: iconic outfits from previous games in the saga, retro visual filters inspired by the space decades (1960 to 1980), a digital artbook illustrating the behind-the-scenes creation of the ship and creatures, an exclusive soundtrack by Jason Graves, and a secret mission to collect items linked to previous Dark Pictures titles. All these elements enhance immersion and replayability for fans of paranoid sci-fi and interactive thrillers.
Our take on Directive 8020 :
A game we could test at launch. And the dread is still there, as oppressive as ever, with real-time gameplay that pushes you to decide quickly to survive. After The Quarry, which sits between slasher vibes and horror puzzle‑game mood, we’re thrown into space, in an Alien‑like setup with an extraterrestrial presence trying to drive the crew to doom.
A title that starts a bit slowly, but you need the setup, and the rest remains just as tasty. Visually it’s a touch rough in places, especially on textures, but it stays solid on its core and remains coherent with the series’ flow. Anyway, that isn’t what we’re chasing here: we come for the story and the horror, and only that. One point worth noting for anyone who cares about those details, though.
Storywise, it’s well written, even if the characters’ backstories could use a bit more development. Still, a welcome difference: the Turning Point mechanic that lets you explore all branching possibilities. Yes, it takes away some of the inevitability of choices and the frustration that accompanies it, but it gives players who don’t want to use it the freedom to proceed as they see fit to finish the adventure. No obligation, and everyone benefits. For those eager to explore all narrative avenues, it’s pure gold. Now it’s time to form your own verdict!
Directive 8020 aims to offer players an intense survival experience where the line between human and inhuman becomes dangerously blurred. In the meantime, we're back in the Dark Pictures saga with The Devil in Me. So get set!
