The countdown starts as soon as you touch down... Marathon, a multiplayer extraction FPS from Bungie, the studio behind Halo and Destiny, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, arrives on March 5, 2026 for PC via Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series. A game built around high-stakes missions, squad-based combat, and loot-driven progression. Thanks to cross-play, players can squad up or face off no matter their platform.
Marathon offers a fresh take on the classic FPS genre. In this game, you play as a Runner—a cybernetic character dispatched to an abandoned planet, Tau Ceti IV, to gather resources and fight for survival. It’s more than just a shooter: it’s a race against the clock and your rivals. Each match pits multiple teams against each other as they explore the map, gather loot, and race to reach the extraction zone before being eliminated.
Exhilaration runs high: should players keep hunting for rare items, or make a quick escape before time runs out? The game features immersive elements like proximity chat, a dedicated solo mode, and a revamped interface for clearer visibility. Its gameplay system will evolve through seasons, all without pay-to-win mechanics that disadvantage players. Updates will be rolled out alongside the main release, at no extra cost.
In Marathon, you step into the shoes of a cyborg mercenary dropped onto a hostile world, where lawlessness reigns and there are no rules. The human colony on Tau Ceti IV has long been abandoned, but it still holds invaluable data and cutting-edge technology just waiting to be plundered. The catch? You're not the only one after it. Other Seekers, like you, will stop at nothing to seize the prize. With rival teams, security drones, and environmental hazards lurking around every corner, every mission becomes a true test of survival.
The goal? Explore the environment, uncover valuable items, and most importantly, make it out alive. If you die before reaching the extraction point, everything is lost. This mechanic fosters intense gaming moments where teamwork, stealth, and strategic decisions can turn the tide. The universe, dark and futuristic, blends industrial settings, cyberpunk vibes, and retro-futuristic elements into a striking aesthetic that instantly immerses you in the action.
Our take on Marathon :
A game we spent several hours with in co-op, starting with a tutorial that teaches you the ropes solo (maps aren’t accessible right away). Once you clear that, the real adventure begins with your friends or with random players.
Impressions and tips :
What can we say about Marathon, Bungie’s futuristic, multiplayer FPS? First, the map access is a bit of a slog, especially lately (we held off publishing a review until the end of the first season). It can be frustrating. Another annoyance: when you get wiped, you drop your loot... not ideal when you’ve been combing the map for better guns, credits, and various artifacts. But that’s part of the game.
This is a game that genuinely shines when played with friends: playing solo with randoms is nice, but everyone tends to chase their own objective, and you lose the collective “multiplayer” progression that gives the game its main spice. It’s a different way to play, sure, but the real appeal sits in the co-op/team play.
We appreciate the relatively clean visuals, even if the flashy buildings and neon accents (the pinks and fluorescents) can be a bit harsh on the eyes. The art direction stays cohesive and quite appealing. On maps you’ll encounter both enemies spawned by the game and rival player groups, and it’s pretty easy to be taken out by an opposing team—especially if you’re not yet seasoned.
Our tip: you have access to free packs containing the basics (weapons, ammo, healing kits...). Use them freely early on to avoid losing the loot you’ve earned (not a big deal since the basic weapons aren’t hard to come by). Once you’ve got your footing, you can chase stronger gear and be confident you’ll extract all of it back to your base (yes, extraction is part of the map experience too).
A multiplatform FPS that stands out from the crowd, bringing a refreshing breeze to the genre.
Accessible, immersive and built for online play, Marathon speaks to players who love fast-paced shooters as well as rich, evolving worlds. Whether you're chasing adrenaline, tactical depth, or simply a fresh multiplayer challenge, this title could well become your next playground. Controllers at the ready!
